How can we stop legal lynching?

The grand jury’s decision not to indict Officer Darren Wilson for the August 9 murder of Ferguson resident Mike Brown is simultaneously shocking and predictable. The global spotlight on Ferguson makes the decision to let Wilson walk all the more surprising, but the ugly reality is that police routinely murder Black and Brown people across the U.S. without facing consequences. The number of people killed by police last year was the highest number in 20 years, according to the FBI itself.

Come to this meeting to discuss why the police are so out of control and what we can do to demand justice.

Panelist:
LaKiza Fowler – sister to Larry Jackson Jr. who was shot and killed by an APD officer as he was trying to go to the bank.

Snehal Shingavi – member of the International Socialist
Organization and the People’s Task Force, a grassroots organization that fights against police brutality and racism.

Justice for Jackson: Pre-Trial Rally

The Pre-Trial for Detective Kleinert who murdered Larry Jackson Jr. last summer has been postponed, AGAIN, for the FOURTH time, until Nov 12th. The Jackson family and the People’s Task Force are asking those who can make it out in the evening to join them for a rally outside the courthouse where we will demand District Attorney Rosemary Lehmburg set a court date to take Kleinert to trial and NOT offer him a plea deal!

Unless we are out there pressuring the District Attorney, Kleinert will get off with no consequences like many other racist police. Come out and stand with the Jackson family as they continue their struggle to seek justice for their son.

We need Real Justice

Larry Jackson Jr was murdered in cold blood. The Grand Jury saw fit to indict former Detective Charles Kleinert for his crime and now we want to take the next steps.

1. We demand a speedy trial so that Larry Jackson’s family can put this whole ordeal behind them and grieve their lost son/father/uncle/brother in peace.

2. Kleinert should face a jury and not be pled out. He should know that just because he was a detective does not mean that he could take an innocent life with impunity.

3. Art Acevedo should be fired as police chief. He condones this behavior on his force and the citizens deserve a change. We want to live on safe streets, not ones where we have to worry that police officers can take our lives at will and then not be punished.

As the people of Ferguson, Missouri rise up against the murder of 18-year-old Michael Brown at the hands of police, we can see the criminal justice system for what it really is, a racist institution meant to keep the poor and working class in fear. Join the People’s Task Force as we host a discussion on police terrorism and the criminal justice system that continues to fail Black and Brown people and grant immunity to racist killers.

LaKiza Fowler – sister to Larry Jackson Jr. who was shot and killed by an APD officer as he was trying to go to the bank.

Rally: Justice for Janiyah

justice4janiyah
On July 20th, 2014 Officer Freddy Paige #7326 was responding to a complaint at Santa Rita Courts regarding teenagers “yelling and screaming”. While there he traumatized the Owens family by using his Taser on their cousin David as he was attempting to pick up his children. Without clearly communicating that he wanted to stop David, Officer Paige fired his Taser with one prong hitting David and the other striking 6-yr-old Janiyah Wheeler, in front of three other children in the apartment.

Despite their grandmother requesting medical aide for Janiyah, Officer Paige failed to call for trained medical personnel and to add insult to injury, did not apologize and arrested David for “evading on foot”. This is another case of the rampant injustice brought on by the police towards people of color and the working class. As the people of Ferguson stand up for Michael Brown, we must stand up with the families here in Austin who are fighting back against police terrorism. Join the Owens family as they tell their side of the story and reveal Officer Paige’s lies, demand his resignation as well as a public apology from Police Chief Art Acevedo.

People’s Task Force: Victory Jam

Nearly a year after the murder of Larry Jackson Jr. by the Austin Police Department, a grand jury has indicted the killer, opening the doors for a conviction. This victory, after a decade of no action against APD for the murders of unarmed people of color, shows the power of our community coming together to organize against injustice.

The People’s Task Force invites you to a Victory Jam, presenting LaKiza, sister to Larry Jackson Jr., followed up by local artists speaking out against racism and police violence in our community.
